The PCB is essentially just a mechanical device used to hold electronic devices in place. They are usually made of a copper layer sandwiched between layers of non-conductive material. Once the design phase of the PCB is complete and all of the components it will house have been selected and their placement finalized, a mask is created which outlines all of the locations of electrical paths that are to be used.
