Patients know that when dermatologists mentions skin cancer, it is time to to sit up and pay attention. Even if they receive reassurances that everything is okay and the issue can be addressed right away, it makes sense to take action before things are able to progress.

Squamous cell carcinoma forms just below the surface of the skin. It most often develops in areas that have been exposed to sun. However, it can also occur in other areas of the body, such as the mucous membranes or genitals. In the beginning, it looks like a thick, rough, scaly patch of skin, but it can spread and become life threatening.
